BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman has pledged to waive up to Tk 10,000 in agricultural loans, including interest, for small farmers if his party forms the next government after the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election.

He made the announcement on Thursday afternoon while addressing a massive election rally at the historic Madrasa Ground in Rajshahi.

Tarique Rahman said, “Over the past 17 years, there has been no meaningful development for the people. What we have seen instead is mega corruption in the name of mega projects.”

Referring to the Barind Multipurpose Development Project, launched by late President Ziaur Rahman and later expanded under former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, he lamented that the project is now almost inactive. “If we return to power, we will revive the Barind project, excavate canals, and undertake dredging of the Padma River,” he said.
Addressing residents of the Padma River region, Tarique Rahman promised to construct the long-discussed Padma Barrage, saying it would bring major benefits for agriculture, water management, and local livelihoods.

He also announced plans to establish a modern cold storage facility for preserving Rajshahi’s renowned mangoes and to create new employment opportunities across the northern region.

“BNP believes in peace and not in the politics of confrontation,” he said. “I don’t want to criticize anyone. Criticism does not feed people. Our goal is to improve the quality of life of our citizens.”

The BNP chairperson called on voters to elect the party’s candidates in all constituencies of Rajshahi and the northern districts to ensure balanced regional development.
The rally was presided over by Rajshahi Metropolitan BNP President Mamnur Rashid Mamun, while General Secretary Mahfuzur Rahman Riton conducted the event. BNP Rajshahi divisional organizing secretary Syed Shaheen Shawkat and several central and local leaders also addressed the gathering.

The event concluded with the formal introduction of BNP’s candidates from Rajshahi, Natore, and Chapainawabganj districts, as Tarique urged voters to ensure their victory in the upcoming polls.

Notably, this was Tarique Rahman’s first visit to Rajshahi since assuming the role of acting chairperson of the BNP. His last visit to the city was in 2004.
