Staff Correspondent: The Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, has appointed Dr. M. Mainul Islam, a distinguished nuclear scientist, as the Chairman (Routine Responsibilities) of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission through an office order dated February 1, 2026. Before appointing Dr. M. Mainul Islam as the Chairman of the Commission, he was appointed as the Member (Physical Science) of the Commission through a separate office order. Before being appointed as the Chairman, he served as the Director of the Planning and Development Department of the Commission's Head Office.
Dr. M. Mainul Islam was born in a respectable Muslim family in Dakshin Halishahar, Chittagong District. He joined the Health Physics and Radioactive Waste Management Department of INST, the Nuclear Energy Research Institute of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, Savar, as a Scientific Officer on April 16, 1995. Dr. Mainul obtained his B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. degrees in Physics with first class respectively from the University of Chittagong.
Later, he obtained a PhD degree in Physics and Technology of Nuclear Reactors from the University of Birmingham, UK and a PhD degree in Physics and Radioactive Waste Management from the University of Warwick, UK. During his career, he has played important roles as the Head of the Health Physics and Radioactive Waste Management Division of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, Savar, AER, INST, Director, INST, Director, Physical Science Division, BAPSHOK, Dhaka, Director of the International Relations Division and National Liaison Officer (NLO) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
While serving in various positions, he served as the Project Director of the ‘Nuclear Power Station Establishment Project, Chittagong’ under the Commission’s Development Activities of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission. In addition, he is serving as a Project Counterpart of various technical projects (TC, INT, RAS etc.) under the Technical Cooperation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) under the Radiation Safety and Radioactive Waste Management Project of the Forum for Nuclear Cooperation in Asia (FNCA) and as a member of the WASC (Waste Safety Standard Committee) of the IAEA. He has important publications in various national and international journals in his research on radiation safety, environmental radioactivity monitoring and radioactive waste management.
