A discussion meeting was held in Barisal on the occasion of Bangla Sign Language Day 2026. The Bangla Sign Language Day was celebrated with the theme 'Promote Bangla Sign Language, Build Smart Bangladesh'. On Saturday, February 7, at 11 am, a discussion meeting was held on the occasion of the day in the hall room of the District Social Service Complex building in Rupatali of the city, organized by the District Administration, District Social Service Office, Disability Service and Help Center.
Shah Md. Rafiqul Islam, Director of the Barisal Divisional Office of the Department of Social Services, was the chief guest on the occasion. AKM Akhtaruzzaman Talukder, Deputy Director of the District Social Service Office, presided over the event. Assistant Directors of the District Social Service Office, Sajjad Parvez, Jabir Ahmed and other officials and employees and media workers were also present in the meeting.
At this time, the chief guest said that sign language is the only language for the exchange of thoughts and feelings of people with speech disabilities in the whole world. The government has been observing this day every year on February 7 through a policy decision taken in an inter-ministerial meeting led by the Ministry of Social Welfare in 2011 to celebrate Bengali Sign Language Day. After the discussion meeting, the chief guest distributed three wheelchairs and two sewing machines among the hearing and speech disabled on behalf of the Department of Social Services.
